Benefits

You can find out more about benefits and how to apply for them.

What are benefits?

Benefits is money that people can apply for to help pay for things like:

  • daily living,
  • housing, and
  • getting out and about.

You have to apply for benefits as the government only gives the benefit money to people who qualify.

There are different kinds of benefits you can apply for depending on your own personal needs, such as:

  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance (CA)
  • Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Access to Work Grant (AWG)

Your benefits will change when you are 18 or when you leave school. You need to find out about this ahead of time.

You can talk to the Money Advice Service for help with benefits.

The service has a Disability Benefit Support Team that can give you support and advice about:

  • Child Disability Allowance
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Limited Capability for Work under Universal Credit
  • Personal Independence Payment
  • Carer’s Allowance

All support and advice the team gives you will be kept private.

The team can give you assistance to help you complete your application forms. They can also help with money advice questions and signpost you to more support.

Drop-in sessions are held at Hubs across the city to support people with questions about disability benefits.

You can arrange to have an appointment:

  • at a Hub,
  • over the phone, or
  • at your home.
